Waste in the Digital Era
Green Drinks June Forum

“Please consider the environment before printing this email”. While we are all familiar with this line to use less paper in an attempt to save trees, do we ever consider the environment before sending that email or taking that extra picture or downloading that movie? We often tend to forget the amount of energy consumed by using digital technology, like sending emails, downloading your bills, uploading pictures on social media, etc. Your computers and smartphones, the networks they are connected to, the data centers, and the receiver’s devices, they all consume energy and more.

Did you know an average online search generates about 7 grams of carbon dioxide? And that the global IT industry represents about 2% of all global carbon emissions? As our use of the internet and digital technology grows, the invisible impact of datacenters, providers and technology grows as well. Some technology providers are switching to renewable energy sources to decrease that footprint and energy efficiency is definitely increasing. Will that be enough?
