Covering China’s One-Child Society

For more than thirty years, Xinran has worked as a journalist, radio personality, author and commentator covering the lives of ordinary people in China’s fast-changing society. Her award-winning books include The Good Women Of China, What the Chinese Don’t Eat and Messages from a Chinese Mother, a collection of stories of those who have lost or had to abandon children. Her latest work, Buy Me The Sky, examines the challenges facing only children, often suffocated by devoted parents and grandparents, and what this means for Chinese society.

Xinran, a journalist through China’s turbulent 1980s and 1990s, women’s rights advocate, and later a commentator on China in publications such as the Guardian, Xinran will discuss her latest work and the future challenges facing Chinese families and a society of grown-up only children.

In total, Xinran has published seven books focusing on Chinese culture. Her complete published works are: The Good Women of China, Sky Burial, What the Chinese Don’t Eat, Miss Chopsticks, China Witness: Voices From a Silent Generation, Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother, and Buy Me The Sky.
